Since I started traveling as a career, I have been constantly looking for new ways to expand my travel photography skills either through cameras or editing processes. One thing I learned very quickly was that I needed a good camera to do the base work on the photos I take.
When Olympus asked me to try out their new OM-D E-M10 Mark IV, I was thrilled. I actually have the previous model of this camera and LOVE it. This is the perfect travel camera for anyone just starting out or even seasoned professionals.
I have been leveling up my travel photography skills for years, but in the last five years I have focused on tremendously. I want to tell you that you do not need a $10,000 camera to take amazing travel photos. If the barrier to you getting a camera that takes amazing photos, videos, etc is price – have no fear, the E-M10 Mark IV is here!
The features I most love on the E-M10 Mark IV are:
- lightweight and compact
- shoots 4K video
- 5-axis in-body image stabilization
- the easiness of using AUTO or SCENE modes to shoot with
- WiFi for easy sharing
I know most professional photographers cringe at the thought of shooting in AUTO, but I cannot stress enough how good the E-M10 Mark IV gets it. Both AUTO and SCENE Modes work so perfectly on the camera, and it saves time and energy trying to set up the perfect shot. These are also really handy if you are new to travel photography. My preference is to shoot in AUTO during the day with the E-M10 Mark IV and I believe the images come out very crisp and clear with vibrant colors.
There are 28 SCENE modes to choose from on the camera from six categories. I love using the scenery mode since I shoot a lot of outdoor shots. The E-M10 Mark IV is smart enough to adjust for your surroundings to give you the best possible output on the imagery, which saves a lot of time. But there are fantastic categories that include people, close-ups, indoors, nightscapes, and motion as well!
Travel photos with the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV
My recent travel preferences have been getting there by driving. One place I really wanted to test out the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV was this city by my house that is lush in greenery. I booked a hotel and drove out there.
I ended up taking photos of two different properties and I selected these because of all the greenery, which is not a normal color I am after in my travel photos because it rarely comes out just the way I want. I usually stick to interiors, tropical destinations, etc. But I wanted to prove to myself that the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV could capture any color/destination and keep it crisp.
And I was right! I am so, so pleased with the imagery from the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV. I did hardly any post edits to the photos and let the AUTO and SCENE functions do the work.
Final thoughts on the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV
I would never recommend a product or service I don’t already love and use myself. In the last two years I have done several projects with Olympus and use their cameras all the time. The OM-D E-M10 Mark IV is an upgrade from the OM-D E-M10 Mark III I already own and use. I think they are both fantastic travel cameras.
If you are in the market to elevate your travel photos and you are not looking to spend a ton of money, the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV is going to be your best pick. It’s lightweight and easy to pack, takes 4K video – which is great if you do YouTube, TikTok, Instagram Reels, or vlogging, WiFi capabilities to easily share your photos (I download them right to my phone and edit very quickly before posting them), it is a mirrorless camera, and most importantly, USER FRIENDLY.
You can pull the camera right out of the box, charge it, turn on SCENE or AUTO mode, and start collecting your travel memories.
