Staying at Mission Point Resort

mission-point
Located on the sunrise side of Mackinac Island and about .6 miles from the bustle of downtown, Mission Point is the perfect place for a relaxing stay on the island. Offering over 18 acres of lakefront property on Lake Huron, you can spend your day outdoors on the Adirondack chairs from sunrise to sunset.

My favorite part of staying at Mission Point, other than the fantastic customer service  –  was being able to see the magical sunrise from the front lawn overlooking Lake Huron.

Activities:
The hotel offers quite the array of activities. Most notably, the movie theater was in the movie “Somewhere in Time.” Some of the other great activities offered by the hotel are:

  • Lakeside Spa and Salon
  • Pool and hot tubs
  • Bike rentals
  • Arcade
  • Kids Club
  • Golf
  • Tennis
  • Shopping
  • and many More!

The Rooms:
The resort offers two buildings of rooms: the main lodge and the straits lodge – both with a plethora of room categories. From standard rooms to suites, you can find anything your heart desires.
I stayed in the main lodge in a 2-bedroom suite. The room has 2 bedrooms each with queen beds and a full size bathroom to share. The bedrooms both came with flat screen TV’s, plush bedding, AC, ceiling fans, and traditional decor.

The hotel retains its rustic charm that you can see throughout. A lot of wood decor, rich colored walls, fascinating wall paper, and window covers to bring the room together. Its very cozy!
Dining:
If you know me .. then you know I love food. Good food. The hotel has 4 dining options from the Marketplace, the bar and grill, the Bistro on the Greens, and Chianti – the higher end of the restaurants.
My two favorite places were the Round Island Bar & Grill and The Marketplace.
The Round Island Bar & Grill was open for three meals a day including a breakfast buffet, lunch, dinner, and late night snacks. I dined between lunch and dinner and enjoyed a Michigan Cherry chicken salad & fish and chips (because I am Irish to the core). Both items were absolutely delicious and I would highly recommend both.

From the Marketplace, I was able to enjoy coffee, sandwiches, fruit – lighter fare. The indoor seating is very modern and the outdoor area offers views of the lawn and Lake Huron.

Getting there:
There is exactly 2 ways to get to the island: by ferry or by plane. I recommend the ferry and it takes less than 20 minutes from Mackinaw City.

Once you arrive to the island, you can either walk to Mission Point (about .6 miles), take their shuttle (if available) or a taxi. The cost for the shuttle and taxi are both $5 per person and are done by horse and carriage.

Overall I enjoyed my stay at Mission Point. It was nice to get out of the downtown area for a couple days and do something different.. relax.
Practical Information:

  • .6 miles from the downtown area but a flat walking surface until you reach the entrance of the hotel, where there is a slightly steep incline
  • Hotel has an elevator
  • Shuttle service – check times. $5 per person and will take your luggage to/from the ferry dock
  • Book in advance – only open from spring to fall, no winter months
  • No cars allowed on the island – you can walk, bike or take a horse and carriage
  • Offers the only movie theater on the island
  • You can rent bikes here to tour the island

Sounds like a great getaway for me. Those fish and chips look amazing, but even better would be playing tennis on vacation! This resort has so many beautiful views. I’d probably annoy everyone and make them get up for sunrise too.

I am reading about Mackinac Island for the first time. Just imagine, an island where cars are not allowed. That definitely must be a magical place. Mission point looks super luxurious and I love that sunrise photo.

What a fabulous place to stay! From the rooms to the food, it all looks great. Would love to see Mackinac Island. I always think of the movie “Somewhere in Time” with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve.

It is Michigan’s secret – tucked away on an island!

Wow! I’ve never heard of this island before (as I’m not that well traveled in that area of the U.S.), but so many things stood out to me. First of all, that sunrise was to die for. And, I love that there are no cars on the island. The horse and carriage taxis are so quaint and unique! The marketplace also looks like a darling place to grab a snack before playing tennis or hitting the pool– all of which looks spectacular. I’ve gotta add this to my U.S. bucket list 🙂

Mission Point Resort looks so cute and homey and I am such a sucker for a good sunrise and great food! I’ll definitely be adding the resort to my bucket list. Especially with the horse and carriage commute to the island — absolutely a unique touch!
