Opening its doors in 1886, The Grand Hotel lives up to its name of being Grand. From the moment you step off the ferry you can board a horse drawn carriage in a luxury coach, fit with a driver and his top hat. The 5 star getaway on Mackinac Island doesn’t disappoint. From afternoon tea, relaxing on the front porch, having a 5 course dinner, and relaxing in your colorful room – the hotel is sure to put a smile on your face.

The Rooms:

The hotel offers 390 rooms with options and no two rooms are the same. Decked out in colorful schemes with a Victorian theme, you will be happy with any room you choose. During my stay I roomed in a Category III room with a balcony overlooking the lake.

Greeted with bright colors and magnificent views, my stay was everything I imagined it to be and more. Comfortable bed, thermostat, fully stocked minibar, flat screen TV, and geranium scented toiletries!

Fun fact: Geraniums grow on the front porch of the hotel and you can find them stylishly throughout the hotel, like on the design of the carpet in the parlor.

The Deck:

The largest in the world, at a length of 660 feet. There’s room for plenty of people to enjoy the views overlooking the lawn, pool and Lake Huron. At one end of the deck you will find a life size chess board and an ice cream shop.

One of the many benefits of staying at the Grand Hotel is that breakfast and a 5 course dinner in the main dining hall is included!

For breakfast it is unlimited and you can choose as many courses as you like or even take on the buffet.

Poached eggs, corned beef hash and potatoes

The breakfast was so delicious. Unlimited coffee, perfectly poached eggs, fresh hash, and the parfait was to die for.

Afternoon Tea:

Served in the beautiful parlor, a traditional Afternoon tea comes with sherry or champagne, tea, little sandwiches, desserts, and scones. The set up is on beautiful china and and really goes well the with ambiance of the room.

After 6:30pm there is a strict dress code in the hotel. Evening attire is the code, and men should wear coats and ties and women should wear a dress, skirt with a blouse or a pant suit. The hotel has varying menus and you can find out on the daily board down by reception which color the menu is for the day. During my stay it was yellow – and it was delicious.

Lobster Asparagus Tart
Creamy onion soup
Filet and shrimp scampi
Pecan Ball

My favorite part of dinner was dessert. I have the biggest sweet tooth in the world, so naturally I am drawn to dessert. If you go, order the pecan ball – delicious ice cream rolled in pecans with a fudge underneath. SO GOOD!

Overall I had a very lovely stay at the Grand Hotel. Everything was perfect.

Other amenities:

  • Pool
  • Golf
  • Lawn activities
  • Salon
  • Art gallery

Need to know:

  • The only way to get to Mackinac Island is by ferry or plane
  • No cars are on the island so you will get around by foot, bike or horse and carriage
  • Starting at 6:30 pm every night, the dress code is in place throughout the entire hotel – it is part of the experience
  • Hotel is not on the Main Street when getting off the ferry. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk and slightly uphill with a steep incline at the entrance
  • Hotel sits on the western side of the island where you can see a sunset

  1. Wow!!! I would go there just for the hotel. It sounds almost too good to be true. I don’t think there is anyplace like it. Where else do you get a horse carriage ride and 5 course dinner!

  2. Looks like it’s straight out of a Victorian era fantasy. To get picked up by horse and carriage and escorted to the hotel sounds like a rare treat indeed! Beautiful setting and building too – overall, a great place to stay 🙂

  3. What a splendid hotel! I’d love to stay here one day – would feel like stepping back in time. I can just picture myself enjoy the view from the decking and I wouldn’t mind tucking into that breakfast. Love the crockery too!

  4. The view is magnificent and the food looks so delicious! Nice touch with the horse carriage that you can take after the ferry, feels like you went back in time. So curious that all the rooms are different would love to explore it!

  5. Ummm, grand seems to be an understatement. I didn’t realize the sheer size until I saw the picture of the deck! Holy shit haha, it was huge!!! I love that even though it’s a high class hotel, it still has that quirky decor that doesn’t make it feel so stuffy. Would love to visit! That view is amazing too.

  6. This looks fabulous. Love the history of the hotel but everything you’ve mentioned looks wonderful. The food would be of interest to me especially. Love the views and also the decks. Many a cocktail could be consumed there.
